Beschreibung: | Examines the hypothesis that a child who experienced great psychosocial disadvantages in early years can only develop into a mentally healthy adult when it has continuously been supported by a reliable, positive significant other. In a retrospective epidemiological study, two groups of 20 persons each with very difficult childhoods were selected from a pool of 600 adults. One of these groups was mentally healthy as adults, the other was mentally ill (International Classification of Diseases). Mental health in adulthood correlated most strongly with the fact that there were no siblings close in age, but that there was a continuous, positive relationship to a significant other (highly significant). Without such a relationship, none of the subjects with a difficult childhood developed into mentally healthy adults. Marked family tensions seemed to prevent the development of such an important relationship. These results are viewed as supporting the psychoanalytic theory of development
