In

This thesis deals with the synthesis of amide-based monomers (H2N–OC–R–CO–NH2, R describes
the aromatic core) and their conversion into covalent triazine-based framework compounds
(CTFs) with the aim of specifically improving their suitability for the adsorption of SO2
and water vapor. In addition, the supramolecular properties of the amide-based monomers
were investigated by means of single-crystal structure analyses prior to CTF synthesis. The
focus was on the influence of structural variations within the monomers on the formation of
characteristic hydrogen bond motifs and on the crystal packing behavior at the molecular level.
The first part of the work focused on investigating the influence of various heteroatoms in the
aromatic core (H2N–OC–R–CO–NH2) of the monomers on the formation of characteristic
hydrogen bond motifs and crystal packing behavior. The single crystal structure data of
3,5‑pyridinedicarboxamide (PDC), 2,5-thiophene dicarboxamide (TDC) and 2,5-
furandicarboxamide (FDC-solv and FDC-subl) were investigated. The crystal structures of
these monomers were obtained from methanol by solvothermal crystallization. The hydrogen
bonds were systematically described using Etter notation. It was found that only in the case of
PDC the heteroatom (nitrogen) acts directly as a hydrogen bond acceptor and participates in
the formation of a C1 1 (6)-chain. In TDC (heteroatom = sulfur) and FDC (heteroatom = oxygen),
on the other hand, the heteroatoms do not interact with the amide groups. The angles
determined between the carbonyl carbons of the amide groups and the respective ring center
are 121° (PDC), 151° (TDC), 137° (FDC-solv) and 135° (FDC-subl).
In the second part of the work, single-crystal structures of naphthalene dicarboxamides (NDA)
with linear (1,4- and 2,6-) and angled (2,7-) arrangements of the amide groups relative to each
other (H2N–OC–R–CO–NH2) were systematically investigated. The crystal structures of these
monomers were also obtained from methanol by solvothermal crystallization. All NDA monomers
exhibit high thermal stability up to over 300 °C and dense packing (ρ = 1.43–1.47 g cm‑3).
In all cases, combinations of C1 1 (4)-chains and R2 2 (8)-ring motifs form hydrogen-bonded ‘ladder
motifs’. The amide groups are at dihedral angles of 22° to 40° to the naphthalene plane. While
in the linear isomers 1,4- and 2,6-NDA the ladder motifs run parallel and are linked to form
two-dimensional hydrogen bond networks (sql topology), the angled geometry of 2,7-NDA
leads to a cds topology. π–π or C–H⋯π interactions are not pronounced, apart from a weak
interaction in 1,4-NDA. Additional analyses using Hirshfeld surfaces and NCI plots provided
detailed insights into the intermolecular interactions.
In the last part of the work, the amide-based monomers were converted to CTFs by means of
a novel P4O10-mediated condensation reaction at 400 °C. This synthesis leads to the formation
of covalent triazine-based networks with structurally embedded polyphosphoric acid residues
(POF-CTFs), which exhibit significantly higher polarizability of the framework surface compared to ionothermally produced CTFs. A total of twelve diamides and one triamide with
different aromatic and heteroaromatic core structures were converted, including symmetrically
para-substituted benzene, biphenyl and terphenyl diamides (CTF-1, -2 and -3), ortho- and
meta-substituted benzenes (CTF-Phth, CTF-Isoph), anellated ring systems such as naphthalene
and anthracene (CTF-Naph, CTF-Anth), and nitrogen-containing pyridine, bipyridine and
pyrazine cores (CTF-2,4-Py, CTF-2,5-Py, CTF-2,6-Py, CTF-Bipy and CTF-Pyr) and a triazinebased
triamide (CTF-1(Trz)). Compared to conventional ionothermal syntheses at the same
temperature, the P4O10-mediated method showed a significantly higher nitrogen yield due to
reduced carbonization as a result of shorter reaction times. This resulted in increased specific
SO2 uptake and improved SO2/CO2 selectivities at low pressures. In addition, the polar structurally
integrated polyphosphate networks led to increased water vapor adsorption, which expands
the application potential of the CTF material class in the field of atmospheric water harvesting.
