| Beschreibung: | This dissertation investigates Rydberg states in ultracold fermionic and bosonic ytterbium (Yb) atoms with the goal of enabling controlled Rydberg–Rydberg interaction studies. Yb atoms are produced in an atomic beam, slowed with a Zeeman slower, and trapped in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). High-resolution spectroscopy is used to measure polarizabilities of high-lying Rydberg states and their lifetimes, which show good agreement with theoretical predictions. Spectroscopic measurements are performed for several bosonic and fermionic Yb isotopes, including the first comprehensive study of Rydberg states in 173Yb.
The experimental setup is upgraded with a two-stage MOT using a new 556 nm laser system, significantly increasing atomic density and reducing the temperature to the microkelvin regime. In addition, a spatially resolved excitation and detection scheme is implemented to enable future studies of interactions between Rydberg atoms. | |||||||
