Beschreibung: | A Bachelor thesis dealing with the topic of trauma in Min Jin Lee's Pachinko and Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai’s The Mountains Sing. Both novels are multigenerational tales taking place in 20th century Korea/Japan and Vietnam respectively, and focus on the hardships, struggles, and lives of two ordinary families trying to survive and live their lives. The historical and political events these stories encompass are often only discussed and looked at with a Western gaze and the focus on Western people who have endured them, if at all, and hence the perspectives and experiences of other, often marginalised people, as well as their traumas, are mostly overlooked. The characters of these two novels face many different historically and politically induced traumas that are seldom discussed in Western latitudes as they represent those marginalised people often overlooked by History. Hence it is argued that Pachinko and The Mountains Sing give voice to the historically and politically induced trauma suffered by Korean and Vietnamese people through the perspectives and experiences of the novels’ characters and thereby not only help the historical reappraisal of these events by adding a marginalised perspective on the matter, but also showing the imbalance of what and who is being remembered. | |||||||
