Dispersions of transition-metal nanoparticles with small diameters (< 10 nm) were synthesized by hydrogen reduction of metal salts or by decomposition of metal-organic precursors like metal carbonyls and hydrocarbyl complexes, under photolytic conditions or conventional or microwave-assisted heating in functionalized and unfunctionalized ionic liquids without the need of additional stabilizers. The decomposition of Ru3(CO)12, Ru6(CO)16, Ir4(CO)12 or MeCpPt(Me)3 in dispersions of thermally reduced graphite oxide or its thiol derivates under optimized microwave-assisted heating conditions resulted in metal-nanoparticle/thermally reduced graphite oxide composite materials. Deposition of transition metal-nanoparticles on surfaces of thermally reduced graphite oxide and its thiol derivates apparently depended on the template-affected formation of Ru-, Rh-, Ir- and Pt-nanoparticles by the ionic liquid 1-nbutyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate. It has been shown that the use of propylene carbonate instead of ionic liquid 1-nbutyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate as dispergant for starting materials led to formation of larger irregular-shaped Ru-nanoparticles decorating sheets of thermally reduced graphite oxide. Metal-nanoparticles from dispersions and metal-nanoparticle/thermally reduced graphite oxide (and its thiol anlog) composite materials were characterized by TEM, HRTEM and HAADF-STEM analyses resulting in statistical interpretations of particle diameters and size distributions. In agreement with particle size distributions determined from microscopic measurements average particle diameters were calculated from powder X-ray diffraction data by the Scherrer-equation. Both, dispersions of transition metal-nanoparticles and metal-nanoparticle/carbon based composite materials were used for catalytic applications. Dispersions of Pt-nanoparticles in imidazolium-, ammonium- and pyrimidinium-based ionic liquids were applied as catalytic systems in biphasic (liquid-liquid) hydrosilylation reactions of terminal and internal alkynes. The composite material of reduced graphite oxide immobilized Ir-nanoparticles was used as highly potential heterogeneous catalytic system in hydrogenation reactions of benzene to cyclohexane under recovering and reuse of the catalyst material in up to ten reaction runs. | |||||||
